A 1940s mountain inn reborn in burel wool and Portuguese design, overlooking the Zezere Glacial Valley in Serra da Estrela, Portugal's largest natural park and UNESCO Global Geopark.
The hotel sits at nearly 2,000 metres, facing the Zezere Glacial Valley. Architect Rogerio Azevedo built the original Pousada de Sao Lourenco in 1940. Designer Maria Keil shaped its furniture, graphic symbolism, and rural aesthetic. Those bones remain. Site Specific Arquitetura reopened the building in 2018, filling every room with exclusively Portuguese design: Cutipol flatware, Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics, Burel Factory wool on the walls. Tradition is refined, takes on a contemporary form, and becomes visible poetry on the walls.
Casa de Sao Lourenco belongs to the Burel Mountain Originals group alongside Burel Factory and Casa das Penhas Douradas. Bound by wool, united by the mountain. Every detail ties back to Serra da Estrela's shepherds, farmers, and artisans. The hotel was born from restoration, not new construction. Local wool lines the ceilings. Regional producers stock the kitchen. Sustainability here has a face and an origin.
Daily guided panoramic walks leave from the hotel, roughly two hours through plateaus and boulders. A five-hour expedition follows the route of the 1881 Scientific Expedition to Serra da Estrela, crossing the high plateau and lagoons with a mountain picnic. Electric bikes run half-day or full-day routes with GPS or a guide. An off-road ridge expedition visits the medieval castle at Linhares da Beira, the village of Videmonte, and a river beach along the Mondego. In winter, guided snowshoeing crosses the high plateau with hot drinks at the summit. The Estrela Geopark tour, led by a geologist, runs monthly for hotel guests only. In the village of Goncalo, master artisan Fernando teaches ancestral basketry. Between May and July, guests join shepherds for sheep shearing and transhumance. Stargazing sessions run after dark with an expert guide.

Spa treatments use oils made from mountain-harvested herbs and draw on ancestral rituals. After dark, a midnight pool session opens both pools exclusively, with sparkling wine and a fruit skewer.
