Nesflaten, Norway
A 1963 modernist hotel by architect Geir Grung, built into a Norwegian hillside with panoramic views over Suldalsvatnet, Rogaland's largest lake.

Architect Geir Grung drew the original plans in 1963. The building steps into the hillside at Nesflaten, its clean lines framing an unbroken view over Suldalsvatnet. The lobby still holds its 1960s character. Sven Ivar Dysthe's 1001 chairs sit beneath FRAMA E27 wall lamps. Local sheepskins drape the furniture. Every surface feels minimalist, in keeping with the hotel's architecture.
In 2015, Tai Grung extended the building, continuing the modernist dialogue across half a century. Owners Olav and Gunhild Moe maintain an Arkitekturbibliotek, a library dedicated to architecture. This is a design hotel at Rogaland's largest lake, where the view never fades and the structure belongs to the landscape it overlooks.
Fishing trips launch directly onto Suldalsvatnet from the hotel. The lake stretches wide below the terrace, Rogaland's largest body of fresh water. Sauna excursions run to Mokleiv, a short trip from the property. Combined fishing-and-sauna packages let you split a day between water and heat. The surrounding mountain landscape opens up walking routes through lush terrain above the lake.

The dining room looks straight over Suldalsvatnet. Three-course and four-course dinners are served with drink packages. Breakfast comes with every room stay. The setting does the work here. Floor-to-ceiling glass pulls the lake and mountains into the meal. Interiors stay minimalist, letting the panoramic view carry the atmosphere.
The sauna faces the panoramic view over Suldalsvatnet. Heat and open landscape sit side by side. Sauna trips to nearby Mokleiv add a wilder setting, reachable as a standalone excursion or paired with a fishing trip on the lake. RÅ Organic Skincare products stock the rooms, keeping things simple and natural.
Energihotellet's approach to sustainability starts with what already exists. The 1963 Geir Grung building was preserved rather than demolished, and the 2015 extension by Tai Grung continued the original design language rather than starting over. Keeping a structure alive for six decades is itself a form of low-impact thinking.
Rooms use RÅ Organic Skincare products. Interiors feature local sheepskins and natural materials sourced from the surrounding Suldal region. The minimalist ethos avoids excess by design.
