Jenesien (San Genesio Atesino), South Tyrol, Italy
A family-run hideaway on the Salten high plateau above Bolzano, where the circular new-build traces the Dolomites' silhouette and trails lead across Europe's largest larch plateau.

Two structures stand on the Salten plateau above Bolzano. The historic Guesthouse holds the hotel's origins. Beside it, the Circle rises, its curved form tracing the silhouette of the Dolomites. From the terraces, the city of Bolzano spreads below while the Dolomites fill the eastern sky. Larch forests, the largest high plateau of their kind in Europe, stretch in every direction.
The Reichhalter-Leonhardy family runs Hotel Belvedere Jenesien with a philosophy they call deeply rooted. Their San Genesio Locale programme connects the kitchen directly with village farmers. Architecture follows nature rather than fighting it. Past and present sit side by side, creating what the family describes as an organic unity. Silence here is not emptiness. It is the altitude, the larches, the long view.
Four to five guided hikes leave the hotel each week. The Salten plateau opens directly from the door, with marked trails crossing larch forests and alpine meadows. The 11-kilometre route to the Stoanerne Mandln stone formations takes around four hours. Kratzberg Lake sits at the end of a moderate half-day hike. The Earth Pyramids in Glaning and the natural rock cinema near Vöran make easier outings.
Spring brings crocus meadows. Summer means alpine hut visits and peak climbs. Autumn turns to vineyard hikes and Torggelen at partner wineries. A Sudtirol Guest Pass covers public transport, hiking buses, and cable cars. Tennis, horse riding, climbing, yoga, biking, and golf fill non-hiking days. Free backpacks, poles, and hiking maps are available at reception.

The kitchen runs on a programme called San Genesio Locale, a Farm to Hotel Connection linking the hotel directly with producers in the village of San Genesio. Dairy, meat, herbs, and vegetables travel short distances from neighbouring farms. This is not a marketing label. It is a joint pilot programme built with the local community.
South Tyrolean traditions shape the menu. A gourmet restaurant, bistro, and patisserie give the day its rhythm. In autumn, vineyard hikes end at partner wineries for Torggelen, the local tradition of new wine and roasted chestnuts. The bar stocks regional wines. Every plate reflects the plateau the hotel stands on.
The Belvedere Spa centres on three saunas, each with a different character. The panorama outdoor sauna faces Bolzano and the Dolomites. Infusion rituals mark the day. The herbal sauna fills with Alpine herb aromas gathered from the Salten plateau, essential oils working on skin and breathing. A steam sauna holds gentle heat and high humidity.
An infinity pool catches the sky. The panoramic relaxation room frames the Dolomites rock formations through floor-to-ceiling glass. Outdoor terraces and a garden offer quieter spots among the larches. Massages and cosmetics treatments run daily. A Day Spa option opens the facilities to visitors beyond overnight guests.
Sustainability at Hotel Belvedere Jenesien starts with food. The San Genesio Locale programme is a joint pilot connecting the kitchen with farmers and producers in the village. Ingredients travel metres, not miles. This shortens supply chains and supports the small-scale agricultural economy of the Salten plateau.
The Circle building follows the contour of the landscape rather than imposing on it. Architecture and nature coexist without force. The family's approach favours restraint, keeping the larch forests and alpine meadows that define the plateau intact and undisturbed.
