Four minimalist pods stand in the frozen landscape outside Alta, Norway's capital of Northern Lights. Wildlife photographer Casper Douma and Arctic guide Cora built Nordic Wilderness Retreat for no more than eight guests at a time. The scale is deliberate. Every encounter, from snorkeling with orcas to reading the aurora, stays small and personal. Nature takes the lead here.
Conservation is not a programme bolted on after the fact. Casper and Cora founded the marine foundation Blue Defenders Bonaire before relocating their mission to Norway. Blue Defenders Norway now collaborates with the Norwegian Orca Survey on marine ecosystem research. The retreat exists because its founders believe the wild can change people who slow down enough to feel it.

Casper Douma leads the Arctic Photography Experience himself. Groups of four learn composition and light handling across frozen terrain over two to three hours. Traditional ice fishing uses small hand rods on frozen lakes, with groups capped at six. The most visceral offering is Orca & Humpback Snorkeling, run in partnership with Whale2Sea during the winter whale migration. Expert guides brief guests on safety before entering the fjord. Wildlife comes first on every outing. All experiences run from November through January, when Alta sits deep in polar night and the Northern Lights arc overhead.

The Nordic Ritual sits at the heart of the retreat. A wood-fired sauna heats slowly while Arctic air sharpens outside. Step from the sauna into an ice bath or under a cold outdoor shower. A dedicated relaxation space lets the body settle between rounds. The founders describe it as a powerful combination of heat, cold, and stillness, designed to reset body and mind. Sustainability at Nordic Wilderness Retreat
Nordic Wilderness Retreat was not built and then given a sustainability mission. Conservation came first. Casper and Cora founded Blue Defenders Bonaire to protect marine life and connect people with the ocean. In October 2026, they handed that foundation to new leadership and launched Blue Defenders Norway, partnering with the Norwegian Orca Survey to advance orca research and marine ecosystem protection.
Every guided experience follows a wildlife-first approach. Group sizes stay at four to six guests to minimise disturbance. The retreat's philosophy is direct: the ocean connects us, no matter where we are. Small scale and slow pace are not marketing choices. They are conservation decisions built into the founding of the place.
