Thatched roofs rise from emerald rice paddies one kilometre from Melides village. The cabanas are built in wood, insulated to eliminate air conditioning, powered by solar panels, and finished with ecological paints and handcrafted pieces by local artisans. From the rooftop, the ocean shimmers beyond the paddy fields. The boundary between architecture and landscape barely exists.
Quinta Amala takes its name from the Sanskrit word for 'pure'. That word governs every decision, structural and human. Wastewater is naturally filtered before returning to the surrounding rice fields. Staff are well-paid, well-housed, and treated with dignity, because a happy team creates happy guests. Co-funded by Alentejo 2030 and the European Union, this is sustainability as founding identity, not retrofit.
