activities at relais castello di morcote

Wine tastings run Wednesday to Saturday at 10:30 and 16:00, limited to twelve guests. Two formats explore the estate's terroir. The Terroir Tasting pours six wines from Morcote and the Mendrisiotto vineyards at Ligornetto, Tremona, and Morbio Superiore. The Premium Tasting adds the Castello di Morcote Riserva and Fuoco. Each session lasts two hours and includes a walk through the terraced vineyards, the castle, and the barrique cellar.

Wine & Dine evenings begin at 19:00. Guests arrive from 18:00 for a self-guided panoramic walk through the vines using a printed map. Dinner unfolds either in the hall overlooking the cellar or outdoors under the stars, around the Feuerring, a ring of fire that symbolises the volcanic porphyry soil beneath the vines.

Gastronomy

Ristorante La Sorgente sits in the medieval village of Vico Morcote. A stone terrace overlooks Lake Lugano. Inside, two intimate dens seat twenty guests. Chef Francesco Sangalli cooks over open flame, charcoal, and smoke. His menu changes with the seasons and draws on indigenous Ticino ingredients from small-scale local farmers.

Vegetables, herbs, and flowers come from the estate's organic gardens. Honey and olive oil are produced at the castle. Pasta, bread, and preserves are made in-house. Cheeses arrive from Ticino alpine pastures. Up on the Vicania alp, a second restaurant serves creative local cooking from a converted stone farmhouse, open March through November. Wine & Dine evenings at the winery pair estate wines with a seasonal menu for up to thirty-five guests.

Sustainability at Relais Castello di Morcote

The Gianini family describes their work as a gift and a privilege. Sustainability here is not a programme. It is the way four generations have farmed this promontory. Vineyards stay grassed with no herbicides. Every row is worked by hand following organic and biodynamic principles. In the cellar, the philosophy is to guide the grapes by interfering as little as possible, letting the volcanic porphyry terroir speak.

The estate earned federal organic certification in 2017. Solar panels power the entire 150-hectare property. Restaurants cook with vegetables, herbs, and flowers from the organic gardens, plus estate honey and olive oil. Biodiversity protection runs through every decision, from grassed vineyard rows to seasonal menus built on what the land provides.
