Part of the hotel's original accommodation offer within the revamped medieval village, individually styled with Istrian heritage design.
Buje, Croatia
A medieval Istrian village, once home to three, revived as 25 rooms of profound countryside luxury among olive groves near Buje.

San Canzian stands on the bones of Muzolini Donji, a medieval hamlet that held just three inhabitants before its revival in 2019. Rough-hewn Istrian stone and weathered timber frame every corridor. Walls carry custom-made artworks and furnishings crafted by local artisans, each piece made for this property alone. The name itself comes from the ruins of the St Cantianus chapel found nearby.
This is profound countryside luxury, a place where nature, heritage, and subtle luxury intertwine. Chef Pavo Klaric's artistic interpretation of Istrian culinary identity anchors daily life as firmly as the olive groves surrounding every building. Vineyards roll across the hills beyond the pool terrace. Nothing here is borrowed from elsewhere. Every detail, from door handles to dining menus, grows from Istrian soil.
Truffle hunting runs through the forests near Motovun, where Istria's black truffles peak from autumn into early spring. Guides lead guests across the damp forest floor with trained dogs. Back at the hotel, olive oil tastings explore San Canzian's own groves. During October and November harvest season, a picnic among the olive trees pairs fresh oils with local cheese and prsut.
Yoga sessions move between the glass-walled Orangerie in cooler months and the poolside terrace in summer. The outdoor gym sits among olive trees, fitted with handcrafted NOHrD wood equipment. After dark, Istria's low light pollution opens the sky for stargazing sessions guided by the concierge team.

Luciano Restaurant is where chef Pavo Klaric turns Istrian terroir into what the hotel calls an artistic interpretation of Istrian culinary identity. Candlelit four-course dinners build around black and summer truffles, estate olive oil, and produce from nearby farms. Prsut and boškarin beef appear alongside foraged herbs from the surrounding hills.
Each plate carries the weight of local provenance. Klaric sources directly from Istrian farmers, shaping menus that shift with the harvest calendar. A separate Nevio Restaurant and Luciano Bar extend the dining options. Truffle Adventure and Taste of Istria packages frame multi-course meals as the centrepiece of longer stays.
The Finnish sauna opens onto a plunge pool with jacuzzi jets, set within stone walls that echo the village architecture. A treatment room offers the signature Lavender de-stress massage, drawing on Istrian lavender grown across the peninsula.
The outdoor pool stretches toward views of vineyard-covered hills. Poolside loungers face open Istrian countryside rather than neighbouring buildings. The olive grove gym, fitted with NOHrD rowing machines, kettlebells, and a boxing bag crafted from natural wood, keeps fitness grounded in the landscape.
San Canzian's sustainability lives in its materials and its relationships. The village revival used Istrian stone and local timber rather than imported alternatives. Every artwork, piece of furniture, and decorative detail was commissioned from regional artisans, keeping craft traditions alive and money within the community.
The kitchen supports a network of Istrian farmers through direct farm-to-table sourcing. Seasonal menus reduce waste by following what the land actually produces. The project received co-financing from the European Union through European Structural and Investment Funds, supporting heritage preservation alongside hospitality development.
