A white concrete ship on the shore of Lake Caldaro. Othmar Barth designed Seehotel Ambach in 1973, and its wall-length windows, white loggias, and cantilevered terraces still dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior. Wall lamps by Tobia Scarpa, coffee tables by Mario Bellini, chairs by Vico Magistretti. Every piece original, every piece in place. The Guardian named it one of the five best lakeside hotels worldwide.
The hotel calls itself a dwelling, not a retreat. "That place where we feel protected, and yet at the same time, free." Thirty-two rooms face the water. A protected wetland biotope with ancient willows and rushes borders the grounds. Two private jetties reach into water that warms to 28 degrees in summer. The spirit of the 70s lives here, undisturbed.
Two private jetties give direct access to Lake Caldaro for swimming in the warmest Alpine waters. SUP boards, rowboats, and pedal boats are free for guests. Morning yoga and pilates run on the jetty during summer months.

Widmann grew up in Rodenegg at the entrance to the Pustertal valley. He trained at Tantris in Munich under Hans Winkler and at the Hotel Ritz in Paris. His motto: "What you give will someday return." Wooden deck terraces project over the water. Outer staircases lead down from the restaurant to the lake. It is very much with the eye that one eats first.
The Badehaus spa opened in 2018 within the biotope park. A Finnish sauna at 90 degrees and a Bio Sauna at 65 degrees with infrared heaters face the wetland greenery. A whirlpool sits alongside.
The 20-metre heated outdoor pool runs parallel to the lakeshore. Two private jetties let swimmers drop straight into Lake Caldaro. Morning yoga and pilates on the jetty are free for guests during summer. The boundaries between interior and exterior disappear here, even in the spa.
Seehotel Ambach borders a protected natural wetland biotope on Lake Caldaro's north-eastern shore. Rushes, ancient willows, and a meadow of fruit trees grow undisturbed alongside the hotel grounds. The kitchen garden and foraging practice tie the restaurant directly to this landscape.
The building itself is an act of preservation. Rather than demolish and rebuild, the owners maintain Othmar Barth's 1973 architecture and its original Italian design furniture. Longevity over replacement. The Badehaus spa was added in 2018 with care to integrate into the existing biotope park rather than expand beyond it.
