Quirós, Asturias, Spain
A 15th-century walled palace in Asturias, shaped entirely by wabi-sabi philosophy. Michelin-starred dining by Monte, a wellness circuit facing Pena Ubina, and deep Asturian silence.

Stone walls five centuries old enclose Solo Palacio's grounds in Quiros, a green valley beneath the peaks of Las Ubinas Natural Park. Inside, every surface shows its age on purpose. Cracked plaster stays cracked. Weathered timber stays weathered. Room categories carry wabi-sabi names like Cozy and Unique, each one shaped by the idea that imperfection holds its own beauty. The philosophy comes from Junichiro Tanizaki's writing on shadows and simplicity.
Solo Palacio is everything that today's mass-produced, technology-saturated culture is not. The walled estate keeps the world at a distance. Slowness is the pace. The palace has drawn attention from National Geographic Traveller, Conde Nast Traveller, and Tablet Hotels, but it remains small and deeply private. This is a place to focus on the blessings hidden in everyday life. Celebrate things as they are.
The Bear Trail starts five minutes from the front door, following old railway tracks into the valley. Las Xanas Gorge carves a 25-minute route along a rock-hewn path above the river. Cueva Huerta, the second-longest cave in Europe, opens to speleology trips with rappelling down its walls.
Canyoning routes run up to seven hours through waterfalls, pools, and natural stone slides. Horseback riding suits all levels, with guided options through the valleys. Electric bikes cover the routes between lakes and protected forests. Kayaking at Valdemurio Reservoir sits 15 minutes away. The EcoAdventure with Donkeys, run by the non-profit BURRU in Las Ubinas Natural Park, costs 30 euros per person. Every cent goes to BURRU.

Solo X Monte brings a Michelin Star kitchen inside the palace walls. Monte, the acclaimed Asturian restaurant, created this partnership exclusively for Solo Palacio guests. No one else has access. The bistro format sits within the wabi-sabi atmosphere of the estate, where aged stone and rough timber frame the meal.
Details of the menu remain deliberately understated, consistent with the palace's philosophy. What matters is that Monte's culinary standards arrive at your table within a setting shaped by slowness and simplicity. Dining here is private, unhurried, and tied to the rhythms of the estate itself.
The Solo Wellness circuit follows a deliberate sequence. It begins at the infinity pool, held at ambient temperature, where the view stretches across the Asturian valley. Next comes the outdoor heated jacuzzi, ten degrees warmer, set under open sky. The circuit ends in the sauna, where the summit of Pena Ubina fills the window.
After the sauna, a plate of fresh fruits and flavored water arrives. Massages are available from a dedicated menu. The whole circuit stays outdoors, exposed to weather and season. Nothing is climate-controlled into sameness. The imperfections of the day, clouds, wind, shifting light, become part of the wellness itself.
Solo Palacio's wabi-sabi philosophy is inherently anti-waste. Celebrating imperfection means nothing gets replaced for the sake of newness. Aged materials stay. The estate resists the cycle of renovation and disposal that defines most hospitality. This is sustainability through restraint, not technology.
Solo Palacio is listed with Select Green Hotels. The hotel partners with BURRU, a non-profit dedicated to donkey protection and environmental preservation in Las Ubinas Natural Park. One hundred percent of the EcoAdventure proceeds go directly to BURRU. The walled estate itself preserves green space within its grounds, keeping the built footprint modest against the surrounding Asturian landscape.
