The SUB-lugarene sit inside the sandbank at Hosnasand, inspired by old earth cellars. Light pours through roof openings and floor-to-ceiling glass facing the sea. Across the property, kysthus designed by Pir 2 Arkitektkontor stand in clean modern lines. Strandbaren rises on the walls of a 1947 cement factory, its glass surfaces two metres above the water. On clear summer evenings, the light flashes of Halten Fyr appear sixteen nautical miles northwest.
Founders Roar Svenning and Torild Langklopp built this from a campsite on the Troningen farm. Their philosophy, NAMO, ties nature, architecture, food and experiences into one interplay. Timber comes from the hotel's own forest. Interior details are salvaged from the farm and a ship-breaking yard. The goal is to preserve the island's 'untouchedness' to the greatest possible extent. Perhaps the experience here is doing absolutely nothing.
Hosnasand beach starts at the front door. Kayak and SUP rentals run from May through September, suitable for beginners. Deep-sea fishing trips depart by boat with a captain for up to ten people. Hiking, running and cycling routes cross the island's wild terrain. Eagles circle overhead, and birdwatching needs no guide.
The beach sauna opens onto the sea for cold plunges between sessions. Dutchtub hot tubs seat four to six people. A larger Skargaards tub holds up to ten. Volleyball, boccia and boule equipment is free from reception. Electric bikes are available through FosenAktiv.no for exploring the coast.

Strandbaren sits on the walls of a cement factory built in 1947. Large glass panels face the open sea. The grill serves local ingredients two metres above the water, Thursday through Sunday in season. Owner Roar Svenning spent years supplying seafood to restaurants in Oslo and Trondheim, and exporting to Japan and France. That knowledge shapes every plate here.
A chef-presented seafood lunch showcases the best catch from Stokkøya's waters. Sparkling wine tastings led by a sommelier run for groups of six or more. Food and drink courses take place at Strandbaren and the nearby Bygdeboksen. The kitchen follows what the coast provides, nothing more.
The beach sauna faces Hosnasand directly. Step out and walk into the sea. Sessions run in two-hour blocks, free for hotel guests. Cold water and warm wood, back and forth, at whatever pace feels right.
Dutchtub hot tubs sit near the shore, wood-fired for four to six people. The larger Skargaards tub holds eight to ten. Both require pre-booking and work best at dusk, when the Trøndelag coast turns quiet. Combine them with the sauna and sea swimming for a full cycle of heat and cold.
