Cervães, Portugal
A 13th-century noble estate north of Braga, where a crenellated medieval tower rises above working vineyards, a baroque chapel, and forest accommodation.

A four-storey stone tower stands twelve metres high at the heart of the Casa de Gomariz. D. Pedro da Cunha built it at the end of the 15th century. Cannon-shaped and zoomorphic gargoyles line its crenellated balcony, echoing details found on the Cathedral of Braga and the collegiate tower of Guimaraes. A baroque chapel with a single nave sits beside it. Vineyards and forest wrap the estate on all sides.
The property traces its roots to the 13th century, when the Canon of the Cathedral of Braga lived here. The current owners' family acquired it in the early 20th century. Today the estate holds a wine bar in the tower, Restaurante Gomariz, the Camellia Spa overlooking the vines, and Casas da Mata, forest lodges built for privacy and stillness. Everything stays within one continuous landscape of stone, vine, and woodland.
Wine tastings run year-round in the Tower Bar, drawing from the estate's own production. The Centro Equestre de Gomariz brings horseback riding onto the property. Tennis courts are free for guests. Bikes are available for rides through the surrounding Minho countryside.
From June to September, outdoor picnics spread across the vineyard grounds. The Relax and Breath programme adds open-air massages from mid-June through September. Tasting menus at Restaurante Gomariz can be booked as evening events. The pace here is deliberate. Mornings in the forest, afternoons among the vines.

Restaurante Gomariz calls its approach a Kitchen of Memories and innovation. Childhood flavours shape the menu. Fresh ingredients from the Minho interior and the Atlantic coast arrive daily, then meet contemporary technique on the plate. The focus stays on taste above all else.
Tasting menus are available each evening from 7:30 to 10:30 PM. Booking is required. The Tower Wine Bar opens from 11:00 AM, pouring estate wines and cocktails through the afternoon. From June through September, picnic service moves the kitchen outdoors, spreading across the vineyard grounds.
The Camellia Spa looks out over the vineyards from its indoor pool. Warm water, a sauna, jacuzzi, and Turkish bath fill the wet area. Treatment rooms host massages, body work, and facial therapies.
From mid-June to the end of September, the Relax and Breath programme moves massage outdoors. Therapists work beneath the trees, surrounded by the estate's forest and vines. The spa is open to non-guests by reservation, keeping the atmosphere calm and unhurried.
The Casa de Gomariz has survived seven centuries through continuous stewardship by successive families. The current owners maintain the medieval tower, baroque chapel, and farmhouse buildings as living architecture rather than museum pieces. Preservation of the estate's forests and vineyards keeps the surrounding landscape intact.
The property's working vineyards and kitchen sourcing from nearby Minho farms and the Atlantic coast reduce supply distances. Forest areas around the Casas da Mata remain undeveloped, preserving biodiversity within the estate grounds.
