Log walls over 125 years old. Oil paintings and period furniture in rooms overlooking Kovstulvann lake. A lit stabbur (old storehouse) glowing in the dark beside the river. Tuddal Høyfjellshotel was built as a sanatorium, where recovery meant fresh air and long walks toward Gaustatoppen. Roald Amundsen visited the year after it opened and called it the natural starting point for the summit. The Gildehallen extension, completed in 2020, sits alongside the original timber structure without competing with it.
The hotel's defining idea is Måltidets Estetikk, the Aesthetics of the Meal. Every evening at 19:00, guests sit down together for a single four-course menu. There is no a la carte. The meal is the main event, a framework for conversation and fellowship. This is not ostentatious luxury. It is authentic Norwegian tradition, practised for over a century in the mountains of Telemark.
