Whitewashed walls with deliberate cutouts reveal thick layers of compacted earth beneath. Each structure rises from taipa, rammed earth excavated from the steep slopes of the Ribeira de Aljezur valley. Regional schist lines the walls. Old tiles salvaged from ruined buildings cover the roofs. Handmade wooden furniture sits alongside locally produced ceramics and textiles. The colour palette stays close to the ground, all ochre, clay and raw stone.
Madalena and Pedro founded Vale Palheiro on hillside terrain they had long cherished in the Costa Vicentina. Their guiding principle is simple: what came from the earth can, in the end, be returned. This is not restoration or imitation. It is ancestral Portuguese construction made habitable again, a connecting thread between the memory of the past and the new life of the valley.
